Congratulations to the 207-2018 CLHS Students of the Month! And a special thanks to Mr. Borras, who treated these superstars to a special lunch.
Congratulations to Estanislao Blas and Jaqueline Avila, two CLHS alumni who were Inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Daley College! Special thanks to Joe Halli and CPS for assisting the students with the cost of the membership fee and for being an amazing partner in ensuring our students are successful.
Links juniors are working hard in their OneGoal classes on getting a jump start on their personal statements for their college applications. This week they worked with various community partners, who took time out of their day to give students feedback on their essays.
For several years, seniors at Spry Community Links have benefited from a generous partnership with The Goodman Theater. Each year, students see several plays and those plays become a part of their curriculum. For instance, students in a senior writing class viewed Wonderful Town as part of a unit on the American Dream, in which students wrote essays on what they thought the American Dream was after synthesizing a variety of sources. These same students explored the relation between pitch and frequency using songs from the play and wrote trigonometric equations to model the notes in the melody of “Ohio,” one of the feature songs from the musical.
Most recently, students viewed the Ibsen play, Enemy of the People. While this play was written in the late 1800's, the issues and themes that the characters grappled with are very much relevant to today. In fact, in addition to seeing this play, students participated in a special "Stage Chemistry" workshop during which they learned about how water sources can be contaminated and how water filtration systems work. This workshop was documented by CBS News. Spry Community Links HS Student Council leaders coordinated a protest, rally and march to protest gun violence across the nation as well as in the City of Chicago. Our students asked for common sense reforms so they can put an end to the school and neighborhood shootings that requires schools in this City to go on lockdown. These student leaders are tomorrow's Senators and we are proud of their leadership and courage.
Our recent pilot of the Google Expeditions VR program has been recognized by the CPS Community Schools Initiative! Read the full newsletter below. The Spry Community Links High School Annual Community Forum focuses on our neighborhood, Little Village, and community issues. Students study issues facing the community and research creative and innovative solutions to those issues through research, math, History, and this year- using the arts through a partnership with the National Museum of Mexican Art’s Antonio Pazaran. Lead teachers for this project, Tim Ruby and Maggie Sack, worked with Mr. Pazaran to create a cross-curricular project that examined social services and community needs while creating architectural designs that addressed those issues all under one roof. Students learned about the community needs by interviewing the local community non-profits and social service agencies. Once their research was complete they worked with the teaching artist, Mr. Pazaran to develop floor plans, perspective elevation drawings and creating a 3D physical model of their structure. The event is held annually at the Open Center for the Arts. This year over a hundred visitors attended to hear the student’s visions for what their community could be. The visitors included students' families, teachers, school staff, as well as community members and stakeholders. Their teachers Maggie Sack and Tim Ruby, as well as the rest of the school community, are excited to see how these young civil servants and architects will one day actualize the dreams inspired by their designs for the Little Village community. Here are some photos from the Spry Community Links High School lead partner agency Youth Guidance taken by their marketing associate- Nicole Wong.
