For several years, seniors at Spry Community Links have benefited from a generous partnership with The Goodman Theater. Each year, students see several plays and those plays become a part of their curriculum. For instance, students in a senior writing class viewed Wonderful Town as part of a unit on the American Dream, in which students wrote essays on what they thought the American Dream was after synthesizing a variety of sources. These same students explored the relation between pitch and frequency using songs from the play and wrote trigonometric equations to model the notes in the melody of “Ohio,” one of the feature songs from the musical.
Most recently, students viewed the Ibsen play, Enemy of the People. While this play was written in the late 1800's, the issues and themes that the characters grappled with are very much relevant to today. In fact, in addition to seeing this play, students participated in a special "Stage Chemistry" workshop during which they learned about how water sources can be contaminated and how water filtration systems work. This workshop was documented by CBS News.
