The Marshall Square Education + Wellness Summit will take place on Saturday, April 27th 2019 at Maria Saucedo Elementary School from 9:30am - 2:00pm. This event will be an opportunity for families in Marshall Square to receive educational and wellness information and to learn about, and connect to, community resources. We're excited to announce that the Education + Wellness Summit call for proposals is now live. Organizations interested in presenting a workshop or hosting a resource table should submit the proposal form online by Friday, March 8th at 5pm. Presentation slots and table space are limited. Please see the attached save the date flyers (English and Spanish) and circulate widely with your networks.
On 21 Dec 2018, JROTC Cadets from Spry Community Links High School gave out Christmas Gifts! The cadets conducted a fund raiser and purchased the toys from the money earned from candy sales. The cadets gave out over 150 toys to preschoolers from Spry Elementary School. The kids were super excited to receive a Christmas gift prior to their Christmas vacation! Many of our students attended the Military ball on 30 November 2018, hosted by City Corps staff. The Military Ball is a ceremony held annually where cadets partake in military traditions that are filled with ceremonial customs and courtesies. It is a formal event and dinner! Attendees and their guest typically wear formal wear or their service military uniform. After the formal portion of the ceremony is complete. Music is played and the cadets and their guest can have fun and dance for the remainder of the evening. CLHS Cadets competed in the City Wide Drill competition hosted at Harlan Senior High School on December 8, 2018. The cadets competed in Individual Rifle Drill and Color Guard. The cadets faced fierce competition form 16 other schools. They performed very well and represented Spry Community Links High School proudly! Names of who competed: -Color Guard- Rodolfo Martinez Faviola Martinez Cecilia Garcia Bryan Diaz -Individual Rifle Drill- Guadalupe Gonzalez Juliana Bautista Jesus Avila Julisa Blas On Wednesday, December 5th, the Spry Community Links High School community welcomed a very special guest to the stage, Chance the Rapper. He was invited to speak to the students of Spry as part of the school’s partnership with Social Works, Chance’s philanthropic organization that has awarded the school a grant to bolster their arts programming. After motivating students in the auditorium, Chance the Rapper cut the ribbon for the New Chance Arts Media Lab. With funding from Chance the Rapper and the Social Works grant, Links was able to purchase new technology for the lab. Additionally, students from Graffiti Club used funding from the grant to design and paint the walls of the lab. Chance the Rapper was thoroughly impressed with the artistic talent displayed by the students at Links. One of the members of Graffiti Club, Yielsi Gonzalez, read a touching speech to Chance the Rapper and guests in the Media Lab which expressed gratitude for the grant. Her speech highlighted the creative and collaborative spirit of the students at Links. Yielsi received a standing ovation from the crowd. Following the lab dedication, Chance returned to the auditorium to kick off Spry’s fall Louder Than a Bomb Poetry Performance. Chance is a Louder than a Bomb Alumnus and spoke about how the program taught him how to work a stage and why it is important to be part of a supportive, artistic community. He then turned the mic over to Josue Arvizo (senior) who introduced student poets Sony Morales (freshman), Yesenia Robles (sophomore), Mari Lopez (senior), and Naiomi Contreras (sophomore). After the Links students performed, Links students were further treated by performances from Pat Frazier and Luis Carranza, resident teaching artists from Young Chicago Authors. The Links Louder Than a Bomb program is made possible through partnerships with Social Works, After School Matters, and Young Chicago Authors Community Links was recently featured in an article by SocialWorks. On Thursday, September 13, students participated in the release of several monarch butterflies. These butterflies were each tagged with an identifying number and in January, students will be able to find out if their butterflies made it to Mexico, their winter destination.
In addition to the release, students talked about the importance of taking care of our communities (including butterflies) and worked in small groups to write their thoughts into poems, such as this one, written by Community Links freshmen: I Am Another You We're creative and give each other ideas. We're successful together, we're equally born, we are the future. We may have our differences, but our friendship will last. We stand up together for what is right. We accomplish our dreams together. Together we triumph, We are Links!
Congratulations to the class of 2018! The teachers (mostly Mr. Ruby) have collected a set of favorite memories of this excellent group of students. We wish you the best of fortune and luck in whatever comes next!
